Generation Y, also known as the millennial generation, includes those born between approximately 1980 and 2000. Positive and confident, millennials are ready to take on the world! Millennials:
- Have a “can-do” attitude about tasks at work.
- Look for feedback about how they are doing frequently – even daily.
- Want a variety of tasks and expect that they will accomplish every one of them.
- Seek leadership, and even structure, from their older and managerial coworkers, and expect to have their ideas sought after and respected.
- Need to see where their career is going and want to know exactly what is required to get there.
- Continually search for their next challenge.
- Are the most connected generation in history and will network right out of their current workplace if their needs are not met.
It has been my privilege to work with numerous clients from this unique group. The characteristics described above demands flexibility in coaching techniques, leading me to develop a method I call The Bucket List of Coaching.
The Bucket List of Coaching process was developed while I was coaching a bright young millennial who retained my services to address her discontent with her current job and employer, just as the literature suggests happens with this cohort.
She wanted a road map to accomplish multiple goals in each of the following: 1 year, 5 years, and 10 years. When we met about halfway through our 3-month engagement, she said she felt overwhelmed and stuck and could not move forward on any of her goals. It became apparent that I needed to offer a special coaching approach for this sharp millennial.
I offered, “Let’s put these goals into buckets …… Professional, Health, Financial and Personal Growth.” We completed our session with each goal in their respective bucket and executable action steps she could use to move forward. Hence, The Bucket List of Coaching was born.
Delightfully, this client has accomplished goals in each of her buckets. Moving narrowly-defined goals to broad categories, designated as buckets, she has come closer to accomplishing her ambitions and is well on her way to setting and realizing new goals.
I use the proven Bucket List of Coaching method with all millennial coachees, as well as clients from other generations. This creative technique has allowed “stuck” clients to become unstuck, and exciting results to occur.
